April 24th – 26th saw Mayfair Games bring Catan Con 2015 to Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center in Nashville, TN. This was the first of its kind from Mayfair Games and an incredible step and really a feel out process of the Nashville area and if Mayfair Games could pull of a convention on its own merit as a board game publishing company.
Here is a demo of Star Trek: Enterprise Alert by Coleman Charlton:
First of all, I want to thank Mayfair Games for trusting Nashville and all of us board gamers with your convention. It truly means a lot to us to have a “special” convention for us board gamers in Nashville that is put on by a major publisher. We sincerely appreciate you bringing your games, spending your time, energy and money in an untested market and giving us the opportunity to prove to you and the world that you can bring your event here. Nashville is most certainly a convention city as it is big, big business here. We now have the largest convention center in the US with the Music City Center, the largest country music event with CMA Fest and countless business conventions here daily. It’s what drives our downtown business and keeps our honky tonks packed to the gills on the weekends. Nashville, is centrally located, very reasonable cost wise and hosts some of the finest facilities, music, warm weather, culture and lots to do for visitors looking for more than just a convention. Nashville was ranked #3 as far as convention cities go in the US.
Catan Con 2015 had your usual tournaments featuring different versions of the Catan board game but Mayfair Games also brought their library of games for people to play or try out for the first time. The staff for Mayfair Games were incredible. They were completely first class in how they treated not only the press but the attendees. They were extremely helpful and willing to play any game all night long to help you learn it and decide if it was for your collection.
Catan Can 2015 featured the Catan National Championships Qualifier. A Settlers of America tournament, the Catan Teen Tournament of course the Big Game of Catan with people lined up down the row of tables all playing to see who could get to 25 points the fastest!
I had the opportunity to take a few of the Mayfair Games staff Alex & Julie Yeager, Morgan Dontanville and Coleman Charlton out for a quick tour of Downtown Nashville on the following Monday. It was great opportunity to talk about the event and share a bit of our cities great history and potential for further events.
Morgan Dontanville and Coleman Charlton even came over and played a few games with me to just hang out and have some authentic southern food!
One of the very exciting things about Catan Con 2015 was how extremely family friendly it was. No revealing cos-play to worry about. Kids loved the giant floor map games to play on and their plenty of kids so it’s a great time for families to bring their kids to their first conventions and let them have all kinds of fun!
All in all Catan Con 2015 had a very intimate feel, which for me, was a pleasant surprise. It allowed me to get to know the staff much better and better immerse myself in the Catan Con experience and what Mayfair Games is all about. I am greatly looking forward to the convention and experiencing even more great games and learning all I can about the incredible success of Catan.
